Our training groups consists of max 6 players. The players are assigned to certain groups based on the player survey, coaches' feedback and our head coach's observations in Spain. This is a tricky puzzle and we always strive to create groups that are well balanced.

Tuesday-Friday 09:00-11:00 or 11:00-13:00 (alternates each day)

1. Beginner (no knowledge)

You have never played beach volleyball before and are unfamiliar with both the rules and the techniques. Your movements in the sand feel awkward, and you need to learn the basics—setting, forearm passing, and serving—from scratch.

2. Beginner (vacationer)

You have played occasionally for example on vacation, but without proper rules or technique. Your hits are uncontrolled, and you usually play just for fun, without any tactical awareness.

Try it at home (exercise):

• Beach Towel Drill: If you have a partner, hold a beach towel between you and try to toss the ball back and forth by “popping” it up with the towel. Focus on timing and minimal movement.

• If controlling the ball this way is very inconsistent and you find it hard to keep it going more than a few passes, you likely fit this level.

3. Beginner (no training)

You have some initial experience with beach volleyball but have never trained in a structured way. Your technique is rough, and you struggle with ball control, positioning, and movement in the sand.

Try it at home (exercise):

• Simple Pepper (Forearm Pass and Set): With a partner, try a “pepper” drill (forearm pass to set, then set back to forearm pass, etc.). Count how many consecutive contacts you can manage before the ball drops.

• If you can’t comfortably complete about 10 continuous passes/sets, your skill is likely at this level.

4. Intermediate (basic skills)

You know the basic techniques and can control the ball to some extent, though your hits aren’t always precise. Your movement in the sand is improving, but your overall game awareness and tactical decisions still need work.

Try it at home (exercise):

• Target Setting/Passing: Mark a target area in your yard or on the court (e.g., use a hula hoop or draw a circle in the sand) and try to forearm pass or set the ball into that circle from 3–4 meters away.

• If you can hit the target area about 30–40% of the time, you’re probably an Intermediate (basic skills). If it’s much higher, you may be above this level.

5. Intermediate (low-level hobby player)

You play regularly with friends and can execute simple plays. Your ball control has improved, but you still make technical mistakes and struggle with more demanding game situations.

Try it at home (exercise):

• Controlled Bump-Set-Hit (no net needed): With a partner, bump (forearm pass) to them, they set you, and you hit the ball to a designated spot on the ground. See how many times in a row you can keep it controlled (i.e., not chasing after the ball wildly).

• If you can maintain basic consistency but lose control when trying more advanced maneuvers (like jump serves or precise attacks), you’re likely here.

6. Intermediate (good-level hobby player)

You have solid technique and can place the ball with intention, vary your attacks, and make tactical decisions. Your understanding of the game is growing, and you’re starting to use strategies deliberately, though your consistency still fluctuates.

Try it at home (exercise):

• Accuracy Hitting Drill: Set up three targets around the court (front left, front right, and deep middle). Have a partner toss or set the ball to you. Attempt to attack each target in a sequence (e.g., left, right, deep, repeat).

• If you can reliably hit the targets in order but still occasionally miss or lack consistency, you’re likely at this level.

7. Advanced (first tournaments 3vs3, 4vs4)

You’ve gained initial tournament experience in larger teams (3v3 or 4v4) and can respond to your team’s and opponents’ plays. Your technique and athleticism are well-developed, but you still aim to improve precision and consistency under pressure.

Try it at home (exercise):

• Pressure Serve Drill: Create a point system where you must successfully serve 5 times in a row to “win.” If you miss, reset the count. Do this aiming for specific zones of the court (e.g., short zone, deep zone).

• If you notice that under self-imposed pressure your serve still breaks down frequently, you might be at this “first tournament” level.

8. Advanced (low-level 2vs2 tournaments)

You play 2-on-2 tournaments at a lower competitive level and are familiar with specific beach volleyball tactics. Your technique, fitness, and game awareness are strong, but you still need to develop more decisiveness and efficiency in tough situations.

Try it at home (exercise):

• Situational Scrimmage Drill: With two teams of two, practice specific scenarios (e.g., the score is 19-19). Focus on targeted serves, tactical shot placement, and quick defensive transitions.

• If you can execute the tactics but struggle to finish rallies under pressure, you’re likely here.

9. Professional (regional tournaments)

You compete regularly in regional 2-on-2 tournaments and can hold your own against strong opponents. Your game is technically sound, physically demanding, and tactically intelligent, but you still work on maintaining peak consistency at all times.

Try it at home (exercise):

• High-Intensity Endurance Drill: In a 2-on-2 setup, play a timed match (e.g., 15–20 minutes of continuous rally) with minimal breaks. Track unforced errors and see if your technique and decision-making decline as you fatigue.

• If you can maintain a high level of play but occasionally lose focus or accuracy when tired, you’re at this level.

10. Professional (national/international tournaments)

You compete at national or international tournaments and can match up against top players. Your game is at the highest level in terms of technique, tactics, and physicality, allowing you to handle complex situations quickly and effectively.

Competing against other players from all over the world is probably the best way to improve your skills; what's even better is that it's loads of fun. :)

At Sunsation Beach we try to organize open tournaments nearly every day. The format of the tournaments varies from classic pool play to individual formats like King & Queen. It is free to register for the tournaments. What kind of tournaments we play will be decided on location.

Your coach will provide your group with 10 balls every session. Please make sure you assist the coach with collecting the ball during and after practice.

Most of our coaches are available for private training sessions. To book a session with your favorite coach, you speak to them directly or ask the head coach to assist you. The price is €80, which gives you 60 minutes with the coach. Whether you wish to invite your friends to the training is up to you.
